SANFORD — A woman accused in September of driving a bus full of school children while under the influence of prescription pills will appear in court today for a motions hearing, prosecutors said.

Bonnie Gilmore Sloan, 51, of Sanford is charged with driving while impaired after an incident in September in which she allegedly hit two mailboxes with her school bus while driving in Broadway on her route for East Lee Middle School. She was arrested by a Lee County sheriff’s deputy while driving her personal vehicle after dropping the students in her bus off at the school.

Investigators later said they found prescription pills in her personal vehicle.

Representatives with the Lee County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Sloan will make a court appearance today. A trial date has not been set. It was unclear Wednesday whether Sloan is represented by an attorney.

Sloan, who was suspended by the school district pending the outcome of the criminal charges, also was charged with at least two counts of driving while impaired in the 1980s. She has worked with the district since 2005 as a bus driver and a cafeteria worker.

State Department of Motor Vehicles records show she had driving while impaired charges in 1985 and 1986. One of the charges resulted in a conviction, the other was dismissed.

I have to disagree this time. Her DUIs were from a long time before she even got hired, and she has paid for those already. In fact in this case her record has nothing to do with this incident. This incident was due to prescription drugs, not alcohol. I am not advocating what she did at all, she should be severely punished for putting those kids and others in danger. I am just saying you shouldn't blame the schools on this one. I am extremely upset with the LCS and how they operate, but in this incident the schools did nothing wrong in my opinion.

People like this should not be driving our children around. They should be doing back ground checks on these teachers and bus drivers to make sure our kids are safe. If she was convicted in past she should not have been driving children.
